Crystal Details: Chrysoprase is a distinct gemstone quality variety of chalcedony quartz, a cryptocrystalline form of silicon dioxide. Also known as Australian Jade, iIt is quite rare and thus one of the more valuable quartz varieties. The colour of chrysoprase is caused by inclusions of a specific nickel compound, the talc mineral willemseite. Chrysoprase develops at relatively low temperatures  in weathered nickel-rich mafic rocks, in particular in metamorphically formed serpentinites in these rocks. Mafic rocks are dark volcanic rocks with a very low silica content. No quartz variety can be found in fresh, unweathered rocks of this type, all the silica in them is bound in silicates. Olivine, Mg₂SiO₄, often a major constituent in these rocks, tends to contain small amounts of nickel, Ni, as a replacement for Mg. When the olivine weathers to serpentine, the nickel is released and forms Ni-rich, typically green minerals, for example the aforementioned willemseite, (Ni,Mg)₃[(OH)₂ Si₄O₁₀]. These fine-grained minerals get trapped in the silica gel that is to become the chrysoprase.

Hardness:  On Mohs scale of mineral hardness - grade 7 (1 being softest, 10 being hardest)

Colour:  The colour of Chrysoprase can be lighter to more intense apple-green, though deeper colours are more desirable.

Tip:  The colour of Chrysoprase may occasionally fade in prolonged light exposure, so care should be taken to keep these gemstones away from repeated exposure to strong lighting or sunlight.

Historical Uses/Folklore: The name is derived from Greek:chrysos, meaning 'gold and prasinon, meaning 'leek', referring to the green colouring of it. It was highly prized by Greeks, Roman and Egyptians alike for its many great powers and alluring soft color. According to Greek legend, chrysoprase ensured a happy marriage and good health, and its power was 'recharged' when placed out in the open during half-moons.
