This is a beautiful piece featuring a pocket of lustrous dogtooth Calcite crystals. The crystals are sharp, lustrous and clear.

Origin:  Brazil

Crystal Details: Semi-transparent to opaque calcium carbonate.  Sometimes with impurities of iron, magnesium, manganese and occasionally zinc and cobalt. Its properties make it one of the most widely used minerals in construction.  

Chemical Composition: Calcium Carbonate CaCO₃

Hardness:  On Mohs scale of mineral hardness - grade 3 (1 being softest, 10 being hardest)

Colour:  Opaque to semi-transparent.

Historical Uses/Folklore: The name Calcite is derived from the Latin word calcit, meaning ‘lime’. It is present in marble and limestone. It was used in Ancient Egypt to make bowls and cups so that the properties would be passed to the people using them. Calcite forms into incredible stalactite shapes, such as in the Wookey Hole caves in Somerset and it was thought that there shapes were animals turned to stone.
