Historical Uses/ Folklore: Lapis lazuli is a stone  may well have been one of the very first stones to have been mined by man with a history stretching back to 5000 BC. This gemstone was highly prised by the pharaohs of ancient Egypt who knew it as the "stone of heaven" and would use it in amulets, cylinder seals, scarabs and funerary masks. It was used to create the blue colouring on ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. It also provided temple priestesses with blue eye shadow.  Although the funerary mask of Tutankhamun is probably one of the most well known artifacts to feature lapis lazuli, it was also found in the Royal Cemetery at Ur which dates back to 3,800 BC. The ruins of this ancient city are in modern day Iraq. It is said to also have been used by ancient Hebrews on ceremonial robes. In medieval times, Lapis Lazuli was considered to impart a tonic influence on the bearer, protect the individual from forces of darkness and bring the person closer to the angels and saints, conferring both enhanced energy and spiritual protection on those who carried this sky-blue gemstone.
