Origin:  Mexico.

Crystal Details: Turquoise is a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminum. Turquoise often contains embedded shiny Pyrite flakes, or may contain black oxide veins running through it. It is sometimes intergrown together with other secondary copper materials, especially Chrysocolla. Turquoise may also form as a pseudomorph of other minerals such as Apatite, Beryl and Feldspars.

Chemical Composition: (CuAl₆(PO₄)₄(OH)₈·4H₂O).

Hardness:  On Mohs scale of mineral hardness - grade 5-6 (1 being softest, 10 being hardest)

Colour:  Turquoise is opaque blue to blue-green in colour with delicate veining or mottled webs of cream or brown.

Historical Uses/Folklore: The earliest record of turquoise being used is from Egypt where it has been found in royal burial sites over 6000 years old. Sacred to Native Americans and brings good fortune and peace and is placed to guard burial sites. The name Turquoise is derived from the French, pierre turquoise, meaning ‘Turkish stone’ because trade routes that brought Turquoise to Europe from the mines in central Asia, travelled through Turkey. Turquoise is an 11th Anniversary gemstone.
