Azurite - Malachite

Origin:  Namibia

Crystal Details: Azurite-Malachite is a pseudomorph; the Azurite occurs first and then with the introduction of water, it slowly turns to Malachite. It is a soft stone and its surface can be easily damaged. This copper carbonate combination is extremely sensitive to heat, will lose colour in the sun and should be stored in a protective and dark place.

Chemical Composition: Cu3((OH)2/(CO3)2

Hardness:  On Mohs scale of mineral hardness - grade 3.5-4 (1 being softest, 10 being hardest)

Colour:  The deep, almost lapis-like blues of azurite and the variegated green shades of malachite. These two copper-based crystals are frequently found in or near copper mines. The chemical formula of the two is almost identical, the reason one is green and the other is blue is due to the copper content of each.

Uses: Crystals are a gift of nature that have been cherished and appreciated by humankind for for millennia. There are countless ways we can incorporate crystals into our daily lives. Placed around the home, worn as jewellery or simply held in the hand they remind us of our relationship with nature and Mother Earth.

It is known that crystals, due to their atomic makeup, hold heat and focus light energy, the often used example is quartz crystals being used in watches to generate an electric charge. Beyond this, it is said that crystals and gemstones have different energies that can be used to enhance your own energetic vibrations. Each gemstone is known for its unique 'energetic' properties.

Properties:  Creativity – Transformation – Confidence – Motivation

The combination of these two stunning and vivid crystals, represents a completeness bringing the earth of malachite and the heaven of azurite together. It encourages deep emotional healing. Azurite with its vivid blue, is known as a ‘stone of heaven’ and promotes insight, intuition, creativity, and softens a rigid mind with love and compassion. Malachite with its intense green, encourages action, change, creativity, connects us to the heart of the earth and will heal deep heartache. Combined into azurite-malachite, their traits are blended together bringing additional calm, a deep connection to the earth, a bright and fresh outlook on life, and will encourage the letting-go of traits such as conceit, arrogance and vanity.

Historical Uses/Folklore: Both Azurite and Malachite were sacred to the Egyptians. For thousands of years this stone has been used in jewelry and ornamental objects. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance it was ground into pigment for use in paint and eye shadow .
