Rubellite (also known as Pink Tourmaline)

Crystal Details: Tourmaline belongs to a complex family of aluminum borosilicates mixed with iron, magnesium, or other various metals that, depending on the proportions of its components, may form as red, pink, yellow, brown, black, green, blue or violet. Its prismatic, vertically striated crystals may be long and slender, or thick and columnar, and are uniquely triangular in cross-section. They often vary in coloration within a single specimen, lengthwise or in cross sections, and may be transparent or opaque. The name Tourmaline comes from an ancient Sinhalese word turmali, meaning “a mixed color precious stone,” or turamali, meaning “something small from the earth. Rubellite is a very striking  gemstone from the colourful tourmaline family.

Hardness:  On Mohs scale of mineral hardness - grade 7 (1 being softest, 10 being hardest)

Colour:  Rubellite is a red reddish-purple or pink variety of elbaite which is in the tourmaline group of minerals. The name rubellite is derived from the Latin name rebellus or reddish and is one of the oldest varietal names for a colour of tourmaline.


Quartz

Crystal Details: Quartz is found in many shapes and formations.

Chemical Composition: SiO(Silicon Dioxide). Trigonal

Hardness:  On Mohs scale of mineral hardness - grade 7 (1 being softest, 10 being hardest)

Colour:  Clear to opaque in the sun. Its natural formation is that of six-sided facets.

Historical Uses/Folklore: Native Americans call it the brain cells of Mother Earth and it is placed in a new-born’s cradle. The Ancient Greeks thought that it was petrified ice and that it would quench thirst. Australian Aboriginals call it the ‘living spirit’ because of its healing powers. In the East it is considered to be pure chi (life force) and the essence of the dragon. Historically has been used to heal wounds and illness. The physical optical properties of clear quartz meant that it was used in making lenses and prisms. It was used in the first radios and in the development of wrist watches and computers.
