Crystal Details: Hematite is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth's surface and is found in the shallow crust. Hematite is a red oxide of iron, like iron rust. Hematite is found in iron-mining areas. It is deposited in hydrothermal veins associated with magmatic rocks however the largest deposits are of sedimentary origin. Hematite usually occurs as massive opaque material. It can also occur as short rhombohedral crystals, which are black or dark iron grey with iridescent surfaces.

Chemical Composition: Iron Dioxide -FeO2

Hardness:  On Mohs scale of mineral hardness - grade 5.5-6.5 (1 being softest, 10 being hardest)

Colour:  Opaque, metallic to dull lustre, in black, grey to silver grey, brown to reddish brown, red. The variety known as rainbow hematite exhibits colours similar to oil patches on water.

It supports through experiences and encourages us to be gentle with ourselves. It is calming when in the company over-energetic people or general chaos. Hematite can create a calm mental place that allows better focus and concentration. It is good for anyone studying.

Historical Uses/Folklore: name hematite is derived from the Greek word ‘haimatites’ meaning blood. Traces of hematite have been found in burial sites from 80,000 years ago. From 2500 BC to 500 BC, hematite was used to make cylindrical seals. In fact, powdered hematite was used by prehistoric man for cave paintings, by the Egyptians to decorate the tombs of pharaohs, and by Native Americans as a war paint. Protective to soldiers in battle. Ancient Greeks who used powdered Hematite to make a red pigment.
