Crystal Details: Sugilite is also known as Wesselite, after it was discovered in the Wessels Manganese Mine in South Africa. It is also known as Purple Turquoise, Cybelene, Lavulite, Luvulite, Royal Azel, Royal Lavulite And Royal Lazelle.

Chemical Composition: Potassium Sodium Lithium Iron Manganese Aluminum Silicate - KNa₂(Fe,Mn,Al)₂Li₃Si₁₂O₃₀

Hardness: On Mohs scale of mineral hardness - grade 6 - 6.5 (1 being softest, 10 being hardest)

Colour: Soft grape to purple with patches of grey, black.

Historical Uses/Folklore: The name Sugilite comes from the geologist Ken-ichi Sugi who discovered it in 1944 in Iwagi Islet, Japan. Sugilite is an example of a mineral name pronounced wrongly more often than correctly. Named after Japanese petrologist Dr. Kenichi Sugi, whose name is pronounced with a hard "g" (as in "geese"), whereas most English speakers mispronounce it with a soft "g" (as in "gene").
