Origin:  Pakistan

Crystal Details: Named after the Latin name for colour of sea water, aquamarine is the blue to blue-green member of the Beryl family. The colour comes from traces of iron. It is mainly associated with granitic pegmatites.

Chemical Composition: Be₃Al₂SiO₆

Hardness:  On Mohs scale of mineral hardness - grade 7.5 - 8 (1 being softest, 10 being hardest)

Colour: Ranges in colour from a faint light blue to blue and bluish-green. The lighter coloured stones are most common. The light blue to blue-green colour of Aquamarine may fade with prolonged exposure to light.

Uses: Crystals are a gift of nature that have been cherished and appreciated by humankind for for millennia. There are countless ways we can incorporate crystals into our daily lives. Aquamarine is calming, soothing and cleansing and it inspires truth, trust and letting go. It holds the feeling of gazing at the sea. A communication stone, it helps overcome the fear of speaking and is excellent for teachers and presenters. It has a connection to the moon and is most effective during the waxing moon phase. The connection to the sea and the moon makes this a stone to help us look inside ourselves. It is a calming stone and is supportive and protective in times of confrontation. Aquamarine is said to protect those who journey by sea, alleviating the fear of water.

Historical Uses/Folklore: Since early times, aquamarine has been believed to endow the wearer with foresight, courage, and happiness. It is said to increase intelligence and make one youthful. As a healing stone, it is said to be effective as a treatment for anxiety and in the Middle Ages it was thought that aquamarine would reduce the effect of poisons. Aquamarine was also believed to be the treasure of mermaids and the stone of sea goddesses and was used by sailors as a talisman of good luck and protection.
