It is known that crystals, due to their atomic makeup, hold heat and focus light energy, the often used example is quartz crystals being used in watches to generate an electric charge. Beyond this, it is said that crystals and gemstones have different energies that can be used to enhance your own energetic vibrations. Each gemstone is known for its unique 'energetic' properties.

Properties:  Peace – Calm – Clarity – Grief - Harmony

A crystal of healing and emotional, physical and mental balance. Amethyst aids in meditation and dreamwork and brings clarity. It enhances memory and motivation, calms and focuses the mind and helps with the formulation of new ideas. It encourages selflessness and spiritual wisdom, enhances psychic abilities and is protective. Amethyst magnifies the energy of other crystals and protects from psychic attack, ill-wishes from other people and electromagnetic, geopathic stress. Is a crystal for the grieving and for those who are passing from this life, aiding the transition through death. Helps in overcoming addictions.

Historical Uses/Folklore: The Ancient Greeks wore the Amethyst as a protection against magic, evil thoughts, homesickness and drunkenness. It was a popular and highly sought after gemstone and wine was served in amethyst cups. The Ancient Egyptians also worked amethysts into amulets as both a form of prayer and protection against harm. Amethyst has religious connotations, as well. It was one of the twelve stones that adorned the breastplate of the high priest Aaron (Exodus 39). Amethyst later has stood for the tribe of Dan, one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. The Apostle Matthias and the Guardian Angel Adnachiel spirit are associated with Amethyst, as well. During the Middle Ages, Amethyst stood for piety and celibacy and was therefore worn by members of the Catholic Church clergy and was used to adorn crosses.

Origin of Name: The name amethyst derives from the ancient Greek word amethustos, meaning sober.
